Mellor Heritage Project

A Community Project exploring the History and Archaeology of the Mellor Area

What did the Romans ever do for us?

The year is AD 86, what do we know about the life of the Celtic inhabitants of the Hilltop at Mellor.
Do they feel threatened by the Roman invaders, or are they tempted by the new trendy Roman lifestyle?
What must they give up to become a Roman citizen and what can they gain?

This Facilitator led session is conducted in costume and in role around the replica Iron Age Roundhouse. The class will meet two of the inhabitants of 1st Century Mellor, one of which chosen to adopt the Roman customs and in doing so has divided the settlement! The Celtic characters will each lead a group through a series of hands on activities designed to reflect either Roman or Celtic life. After a 1st Century lunch the class will hear stories of Agricolas fort in nearby Mancunium and by appointing a village elder, will discuss and debate the pros and cons of Romanisation.

Hands on activities may include:
