Trench 65

The large open area in Trench 65

Another huge trench has been opened in the centre of the Old Vicarage garden to try to complete the jisaw in that area and answer some of unanswered questions: Will we find any dating material to tell us whether all of our Prehistoric Roundhouses are from the same period? Will we find where what we think is the shallower outer ditch system meeting the Inner Defensive ditch? Why is one of John Roberts old Golden Virginia wrappers in the fill containing the Mesolithic flints?

The size of the open area is giving Brian apoplexy, not to mention John and Ann, whose lovely peacefull garden is ruined once again. Yet already we have glimpses of dark stains, fragments of burnt bone, what look like stone filled gullies and a strange sequence of dwarf yellow pegs. Peter and Adam explain to the group of volunteers how we hope the next few weeks might give us some answers.

Ann OMara and the Finds tent
Meanwhile Ann O'Mara has set up the Finds tent ready to wash, sort and catalogue anything interesting that comes out of the ground.
