Mesolithic Flints
One of the most surprising outcomes of the 1999 and 2000 excavations
was the discovery of an assemblage of flints from Trench 3, but a further 93 Flint flakes were found in the nearby Trench 21 in the 2003 Season
Dr. Andrew Myers, Assistant County Archaeologist, considers that the range of fragments indicate that a wide range of flaking activity
has taken place on the site, the character of the unretouched flake and blade assemblage
indicates a Later Mesolithic date and that blade cores and flint falkes were both produced, used and discarded on the site.
The flint itself seems to have come from boulder clay deposits to both
the East and West of the Pennines and from either the wolds of
Lincolnshire, East Yorkshire or the Trent Valley in Nottinghamshire.Read the full 1999 Report from Dr Andrew Myers
